OUR HISTORY
By 1958, the Coleman County Telephone Cooperative, Inc. (CCTC) had acquired six area telephone exchanges, marking a significant expansion. These exchanges included Trickham, purchased from Mr. and Mrs. H.B. James; Hall (Fisk), from Ralph Hall; Valera, from Mr. and Mrs. H.T. Crenshaw; Gouldbusk Free Rural Telephone Company in Gouldbusk; Santa Anna; and Burkett, purchased from V.C. and Rita Adams.
In July 1954, CCTC secured its first REA loan of $540,000 at a 2% interest rate, enabling rapid progress within the Cooperative. By 1961, all exchanges had transitioned to a dial system, and by January 1964, local operators were no longer needed, thanks to the shift to unattended operation.
To meet the demands of a growing membership, new office and plant facilities were constructed in 1964 in Santa Anna. By 1968, the Santa Anna exchange had expanded to capacity, necessitating the installation of 200 additional lines to accommodate its rapid growth.
CCTC established its tariff in August 1976, setting the rules and regulations for operations. Over the years, amendments to the tariff, approved by the Public Utility Commission, have kept it up-to-date.
A major milestone came in late 1977, with the conversion to private lines across all exchanges. Today, CCTC serves approximately 2,700 subscribers across a 1,280-square-mile area. In 2023, CCTC celebrated its 70th anniversary.
In 1989, CCTC formed Coleman County Telecommunications, Ltd., allowing the Cooperative to expand its offerings to new customers beyond its membership area. This growth included high-speed wireless internet, DSL, and Fiber to the Home (FTTH) services. CCTC was recognized as a Smart Rural Community Provider by NTCA in 2020 and remains dedicated to extending its FTTH network to all rural communities it serves.
The leadership of CCTC has been instrumental in its success. George Johnson served as the Cooperative’s first manager from May 1954 to February 1956. He was succeeded by Allyn Gill (March 1956–May 1967), Thomas Wristen (May 1967–June 1983), Danny Kellar (June 1983–January 1998), and Michael R. Walton (April 1998–August 2007). Tim Humpert managed CCTC from April 2008 until his retirement in August 2024. Today, Kandra Young serves as the General Manager, guiding CCTC into a future of innovation and growth.
